Lo and Maria Are Baptized

Lindsay - Awake Doodle

So this week we also had divisions. I stayed in my area and was paired with a sister from Angola. She cracks me up. we were at a Loja (store) and I was resting my arm on the counter. Sister Mohangueno looked over at me then with a face of terror she pointed at my elbow and said “QUE ISSO?!” (what is that) I looked down at my elbow and there was a giant half dead insect stuck to my elbow trying to flap its wings away to freedom. I laughed so hard.

a baby threw up on my foot…

Lindsay - Little girl who holds her hand

Oh and I had a burger and fries at some restaurant. It almost tasted like american food. Unfortunately that restaurant gave  us all some kind of food poisoning. I woke up at like 4 in the morning like hmmm I dont feel well then went back to sleep. That was about it for me. The other sisters didnt take it so well… bummer.

Here’s a picture of a little girl that holds my hand whenever she walks with us. Little girls really like me here.

Maria and Lo Are Baptized

We had two baptisms!!!! Maria and Lo. I love them both. Lo is the one that we just met like 2 weeks ago and she was like BAPTIZE MEH. so we did. shes awesome. then we had Maria who is the mother of the first person I baptized. and He got to baptize his mom! so awesome! After the baptism Maria was crying and thanking us for helping her find her way to Christ which was so sweet. She one of the most giving people I’ve ever met.

Lindsay Maria and Lo Baptism

Lindsay Sister Yerman and NeliceNelice is 14 and so sweet. She loves talking to us and the lessons. She not only listens well to the lessons but she reads the pamphlets multiple times, reads and marks her scriptures everyday, and she has a notebook where she copies down the questions from the pamphlets and answers them. SHES 14. Unfortunately her mom won’t let her be baptized. We’re working with her mom and trying to gain her trust so hopefully all will go smoothly. She gave us a note the other day telling us how she would never forget the teaching we gave her and how she was sure she would see us in the celestial kingdom. The member who was teaching with us cried

Mario and His Family

Well I had a really good week. Hard but good. My investigators are awesome. That family I talked about last time is amaaazing. Mario was the first to be baptized and we are now teaching 7 of his relatives. One is scheduled to be baptized this Saturday! yay!

Around a week ago we randomly met a girl named Lo. She is 18 and was really quiet when we first met here. I didn’t think she would progress but of course we kept visiting her. So we gave her the first lesson and invited her to go to church and she actually went. The next time we went to teach her she told us she wanted to be a missionary too and be baptized. WHAT.  she has crazy faith. We set a baptism date for her and the next time we taught her she asked if we could move her baptism date to this saturday instead of 2 weeks from now. So crazy! So now we have the job of teaching her all the commandments in one week. Challenge accepted.

Lesson Distractions

LIttle brother mulanWe have tons more investigators who are awesome but there’s a few for you. Lessons can be awesome like that. They can also be really painful haha. You know that first scene in Mulan when the dad is praying for mulan and all the chickens fly in and hes just like “pleeeeaase. PLEEEEEASE HELP HER.” Yeah, that’s sometimes how I feel. There are dogs fighting outside, it’s 120 degrees in the house, the investigator is yelling to someone in another room in creole, and my companion just turned to me and said “Sister sharp would you like to explain Lehi’s vision.” (AS IF I KNOW HOW TO SAY GREAT AND SPACIOUS BUILDING) and I’m just sitting there praying in my head like “pleeeeease. PLEEEEEEEEAAAASE HELP ME.”

Splash Zone

So the baptisms here are always exciting. A lot of people are afraid of water here. Sister Yerman was telling me they had an investigator who wouldn’t let go of the bishops neck who was baptizing her so he just dunked himself and her in the water. The one last week was funny cause the member who was doing the baptism dunked the person super fast and violent. I’m pretty sure there was a splash zone.
Lindsay Sister Yerman on a hill
well thats all I’ve got for you guys! I hope you have a great week.

The Wedding Planner

Wedding picSo interesting thing about being a missionary here. We’re also the ward missionaries and we’re in charge of getting people married. There are so many couples here that live together and have kids together and accept the gospel but need to get married. so we help them with that.

Oh! so if you remember the first email I sent I talked about a guy named Mario we baptized. He’s really awesome. Well now we’re teaching his mom, two of his brothers, and a sister-in-law. Well we talked with the one brother and his girlfriend and we asked them if they would get married and they agreed. right there. so now were helping plan their wedding. YAYYYY WEDDINGGGG!

My Comp – Sister Yerman

Sister Yerman is a quiet no nonsense missionary which is probably a good thing for me. there’s a lot of silence between us because when I say stuff she always responds with “mmm”
“Man its extra hot out today!”
“That rice was way good”
She really is a great missionary though. Ive learned a lot from her.

The Sound of Music

CELINEPeople here like to listen to american music, but sometimes it’s not even good american music. We were teaching a lesson to a 14 year old girl and suddenly super loud the person next door starts playing Celine Dion. So Im trying to listen to the girl but all I can hear is “CAUSE IM YOUR LAAAAADYYYYYYYYY! AND YOU ARE MY MAAAAAAAAAN!” with that corny 90s synth. I almost started laughing in the lesson.

Note to Self

I’m reading my notes of stuff to write down to say in my email and it says “I’m still the stupid American” I think that’s pretty self explanatory.
My portuguese is improving but now Im starting to get english and portuguese words mixed up. Sometimes I accidentally say english words in a portuguese accent thinking its portuguese. last night in a lesson I was like  “nos respeitamos nossos corpos because sao….desculpa… porque sao um dom sagrado” embarrassing.

It’s still really hot here… but the rainy season is starting so it was cloudy the other day which was really nice. I cant wait for the rain! Sometimes I think my legs are really tan but then I take a shower and realize theyre just dirty… bummer.

Well I think thats it for me this week. love you all!

Hot News

This is a picture of me wearing my african dress, with an african banana, and crazy african hair. AFRIKER.

Hey newsflash everyone. Africa is hot. who knew. Seriously I’m covered in sweat ALL THE TIME. It’s pretty gross.

You’re Grounded!

So my second week was good and long. I feel like I’ve been here forever. It was a good week though. We got 8 new investigators which is good. Unfortunantely we were supposed to have a baptism for a girl named Nadia but her mom (who is a member) didn’t let her get baptized for misbehaving… talk about harsh punishment. some parents ground their children, others delay their eternal salvation. well were working with her and hopefully she will be baptised this week.

The langage is slowly coming. I can understand a lot more now and I teach a decent amount of the lessons. Though I don’t think they actually understand what im saying. ah well. I don’t understand what people are saying when they talk fast. or in creole.

We were in the middle of a lesson and the lady we were teaching started talking really fast and loud. I thought that she was just sharing her testimony really enthusiastically so I was just smiling and nodding, pretending I knew what she was saying. Alas. She was verballing abusing her children. Muh bad. Oh and then I almost starting laughing which would have been really bad. I couldnt help it though. She was spewing out all these african words and she chucked a pillow across the room that landed in a flower pot and one of the flowers was all like derrrp and crumpled over.

HissThen the voice of Hiss from the old robin hood popped in my head saying “oh now look what youve done, youve broken your mothers flower”. I almost lost it.

There are some weird things that go on in our lessons. a lot of people cant afford to buy diapers so their babies are just naked. One of our investigators was holding her baby on her lap and he peed on her in the middle of the lessons. which also splattered on my companions foot. LOLZ.

Girl Power

Women here are no joke! they are not delicate flowers. we saw a hurking lady walk out in her bra carrying a cabinet then she just tore the thing to pieces with her bare hands and chucked it in the garbage. AFRICAN XENA WARRIOR PRINCESS.

The Food

so I still havent had to eat at a members house yet but I almost had to last night! a less active member brought all this food out after we taught and was telling us to eat. my companion said to me in english “last time we ate her my companion got really sick” I was like NOOOOOOOO so she told the lady I couldnt eat cause I had gas. HAHA. win. she took one for the team and ate the food. She doesnt really get sick cause she grew up in mexico so she used to it.
the food here isnt bad. Im in praia so we have a lot of normal food. we eat a lot of rice and beans but its good. I have a serious cookie addiction. I eat like 15 at a time. Its out of control. Im like angelica from rugrats. the fruit here is crazy good. mangos are delicious.

Lindsay the Prophet

Oh yeah we met a guy on the street named bruno who was playing some game. He told us he lost the last round and we were like “oh dont worry im sure youll win the next one” then we marked to teach him that night. So we start teaching him and half way through the lesson he was like “oh I already know your church is true” in surprise we asked how he knew and he replied “you told me I would win the next game and I did!” He thinks were like prophets or something. But we told him to pray about it and he agreed to get baptized. WIN.

Well I could probably talk about the weird stuff we see everyday but I think that will do for now. Have a great week everyone!

Someone Really Misses Her Aunt Lindsay

Lindsay and LiliAlyssa wrote:

We were looking at a picture from her (Lilianna’s birthday) party last year, and she said, “Look at how pretty Lindsay is! I want Lindsay back. Can I have Lindsay back now?”

Colorful Cabo Verde

well im here! This place is crazy. I dont even know where to start. Ill start with the travel there. We left monday morning for the airport and the travel went really smoothly. The airplane wasnt sketchy at all. As it turns out only the planes that go island to island are sketchy and since i serve in praia i didnt have to travel anywhere. we were the only white people on the plane. haha I tried speaking portugese to one person which was pretty awful and after a minute of me trying to figure out what i was trying to say the lady was like “uh… you can speak english”. embarrassing.

we were all so tired from the 27 hours of travel that we were barely conscious. so after we ate we went to our apartments and i went straight to a lesson with an investigator. that was a culture shock. i still dont understand anything anyone says. especially when people speak creole. creole just sounds like an african language. ill learn it eventually but i just focus on portuguese for now.

Lindsay and First Baptism

I had my first baptism on saturday!!!! It was so good. he was actually the first person I taught when I got there my first day. His name is Mario. His mom was never super interested in the church but she came to the baptism and actually cried when he was baptised which was sweet. afterwards I asked how he felt and he said “lev, sento lev” gesturing to his chest. (which means light, I feel light) an overall cool experience.

The Houses

most of the houses here are just 1 room with cement walls and a dirt floor. some dont have all the walls. many dont have doors. also the houses are hotter than the outside. the only house ive been in with air conditioning is our mission presidents.

Third World

haha ok so this is definitely a third world country. Its exactly what you think a third world country would be like but smells worse… and dirtier. people pee in buckets then dump them in the streets. its pretty gross. our apartment has a bathroom though! since we live in praia we always have other sister staying with us for conferences and stuff. they take up all the hot water! …LOLLLLZZZZZ just kidding we dont have hot water. we just take cold bucket showers. I havent gotten used to that yet.
we also have to bleach our fruits and veggies and we can only drink purified water. I havent had to eat at a members house yet but I might have to tonight. not looking forward to the after effects of that.
so putting all that aside this place is great. the people are so welcoming and patient with me. they love my hair. little girls will just play with it when I teach. african babies are SO cute. I dont speak a lot in our lessons but I usually teach part or share my testimony. I know my portuguese is really bad but when i talk the people always listen really intently and encourage me which is great.
